Circular cellular agriculture

All of Calysta’s products are built on the same patented fermentation platform.

Calysta produces protein by harnessing the power of a naturally-occurring microorganism that converts carbon and energy into a nutritious, non-GMO protein by fermentation – ideal for use as a feed and food ingredient.

Because it uses no animal or plant matter, our fermentation platform is already a very low impact way to produce protein – but our mission has always been to make more from less.

Our new process improvements offer protein without limits. We can both embrace the energy transition to renewable power and produce protein with net zero carbon emissions, creating a truly circular platform to produce high-quality protein products.

That’s how we provide food security for all.

Fermentation Oxygen Nitrogen Carbon and Energy Separation Water & Nutrients Drying and Packaging Distribution STEP 1 Gases are mixed in a proprietary fermenter where they are consumed by Calysta's natural microorganisms which form the basis of microbial protein. STEP 2 Microbial protein is separated from the liquid in which it is grown, with water and nutrients returned to the fermenter. STEP 3 Microbial protein is dried and packaged per customer specifications. STEP 4 Products are shipped as ingredients for pet food or animal feed worldwide.

Our microbial protein

Spirulina. Miso. Baker’s yeast. Mycoprotein. What do all these have in common? They’re all microbial proteins eaten every day by millions. Microbes and their fermented products have always been a part of the food chain, whether that’s yeast for bread or bacteria for yogurt.

Calysta builds upon this history using a naturally occurring, non-GM microbe to produce a nutritious protein that will help feed a growing and protein-hungry world.

Future proof technology

Calysta is building on two decades of engineering and process development to produce microbial protein at commercial scale. By simply replicating our modular design, we will soon be producing more than 100,000 tonnes per year.

This ensures microbial proteins are reliably and continually available in the quantities necessary to accommodate food producers, pet food manufacturers, and animal feed companies.
