Director of Aquaculture Nutrition

Reports to:

Responsibilities:

  • Interface with customer technical departments to provide expertise on formulating feeds with FeedKind and articulating value proposition
  • Develop relationships with influential farmers and other supply chain participants to drive demand for FeedKind
  • Help design experiments, inspect CRO facilities, and incorporate the latest technology and techniques to identify nutritional and health benefits of FeedKind in-vivo
  • Monitor trials with CROs and feed companies and intervene when necessary
  • Develop relationships with leading academics to support basic research on FeedKind protein
  • Support sales and marketing by interpreting trial results and helping articulate value proposition
  • Support regulatory teams in designing trials for approval in new countries and applications
  • Ability to grow with the company and support a broader sales and marketing organization in the future

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in aquaculture nutrition, veterinary medicine, or aquaculture
  • >7 years industry experience
  • Willingness and ability to travel globally (~35% of time)
  • Experience across a variety of freshwater and marine species, experience with Litopenaeus vannamei

Sr./Jr. Downstream Process Development Engineer

As a Sr./Jr. Downstream Process Development Engineer, you will be a key member of our technical team, responsible for the process development and the commercial scale up of innovative microbial derived proteins. The engineer will be involved in both laboratory and pilot plant processing trials/testing, optimization of key process operating parameters from the lab to pilot plant scale, and technology transfer to manufacturing facilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead development and improvement of downstream processes at bench, pilot and commercial scales to optimize purification, recovery and concentration of various protein fractions derived from microbial biomass.
  • Utilize a variety of relevant techniques and unit operations (centrifugation, filtration, evaporation, distillation, etc.) in developing cost-effective separation processes to recover and separate proteins from complex fermentation broth.
  • Create and execute short term (bench and kilo pilot) and long term (large pilot to commercial) technology projects through internal development and external collaboration.
  • Perform data analysis modelling and simulation of current or proposed process alternatives to develop understanding of the tradeoffs between process parameters, costs and product functionality.
  • Develop mass balances, process flow diagrams P&IDs, economic analysis, SOPs & batch records.
  • Work closely with Process Development/Food Science team to assess products, developing critical understandings of the products from both process and formulation changes.
  • Manage projects with local technical technology partners and liaise with R&D team in California.
  • Oversee equipment selection, procurement, installation and start-up – calculate capital cost and scale up commercial process.
  • Provide technical expertise in process development supporting global protein business strategy.
  • Participate in the establishment and management of best practices for data integrity and reporting compliance in a food GMP environment.
  • Mentor and supervise staff, provide technical reports and presentations and communicate results and challenges to key stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the company’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio and assist on preparation of patent applications.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D (preferred) or MS or BS in chemical engineering, chemistry, food science or related field of study.
  • 5-15+ years of relevant industry experience in protein process development and /or manufacturing of food ingredients for Sr. Downstream Process Engineer or 2–8+ years for Jr. Downstream Process Engineer.
  • Demonstrated hands on experience of pilot and/or industrial scale unit operations and equipment for food ingredient manufacturing.
  • In depth technical knowledge of downstream processing equipment including centrifugation, MF, UF/DF, multi-effect evaporation, homogenization, chromatography, extrusion, spray drying, lyophilization, pasteurization or thermal process, etc.
  • Experience with design of experiments and statistical process control.
  • Understanding of engineering/processing issues involved in scale-up and possesses both practical and analytical skills to implement relevant scale-down models.
  • Experience with process modeling and simulation using computational tools – mass balance, cost estimation, etc.
  • Understanding of basic protein biochemistry, microbiology and fermentation desired.
  • Supervision experience desired.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.vAbility to collaborate in a cross-functional team of engineers, scientists, operators, vendors, regulatory experts, food application scientists, marketing people and partners/collaborators.
  • Familiarity with cGMPs, GLPs, GDPs and ICH guidelines a strong plus.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and consumable stock levels
  • Develop and implement new and improved methods of analysis
  • Oversee the technical transfer of methods between laboratories

Requirements:

  • B.Sc. in chemistry or related subject
  • 2-8 years of experience working in an analytical laboratory
  • Knowledge of COSHH and EHS standards
  • Experience with a variety of modern analytical techniques including HPLC, GC and MP-AES, UV spectroscopy
  • NIR experience would be an advantage
  • Experience working in a busy analytical laboratory supporting a production plant
